There are Free software tools that will protect you. You must install a security toolbar like the MyLittleMole toolbar which will alert you if you are tricked into going to a spoof eBay or spoof PayPal website. This will help you avoid account hijacking. You can also use auction analysis software, like the Auction Inquisitor Analysis program, which will analyze auctions and alert you if it finds signs of fraud in an auction.
